Salomey Tsotsoo Martey

Though I was almost blind and deaf, the Lord made a way for me to enroll at the Good News Theological College and Seminary in 2002.

I am Salomey Tsotsoo Martey. My parents are Mr. Joseph Nii Dei Martey, a fisherman, and Mrs. Charlotte Panaakie, a trader and seamstress. I come from Prampram in the Greater Accra region of Ghana. I am forty-four years old and a mother of four – the oldest is 22; the youngest is 9. My husband is Mr. Solomon Tettey Nartey. I completed my elementary education in 1979 and had a year’s experience at the Nungua Secondary school in 1980 but I dropped out.

I became a trader for some years and left to settle at Dunkwa on Offin in the Central region. It was there that I married to Mr. Nartey in 1984. I stopped trading and established a nursery school in 1986 but I donated the nursery to the Government of Ghana in 1991. I left Dunkwa and came back to Teshie, Accra where I established the Ebenezer Nursery and Preparatory school in 1992. I managed the school to 2000.

In 1977 I experienced some darkness whenever I looked at things. Though there were many efforts by eye specialists but my sight deteriorated at a fast rate. I did not see far, I could not read. While worrying about my poor sight, I had an ear infection in 1996. Due to the inability of medical doctors to treat my eye, I consulted herbal practitioners but that was a mistake since the herbal medicine could not treat the infection. After the infection had deteriorated rapidly, I went to a hospital. The infection subsided a little but I lost my hearing in 2001.

I joined Jesus Is Alive Evangelistic Ministries in 1997. I sensed a call from God. Though I was almost blind and deaf, I heard the voice of the Lord, while praying, that I should get up and proclaim the gospel if I want to be free. Prior to that, my pastor had told me that the Lord’s hand was upon me so I should consider working for Him. I obeyed the voice and began preaching the gospel from house to house. Later in a dream I was told to move from one public place to another so I obeyed. The Lord made a way for me to enroll at the Good News Theological College and Seminary in 2002. I graduated with a diploma in Pastoral Ministry in 2005. I enrolled in the Bachelor of Theology program the following year.

The lecturers of Good News Theological College and Seminary have been kind to me. The seminary has been able to raise funds for my education. I have received scholarship throughout my theological education at the seminary. I pay part of my fees by doing some jobs on campus.

Formerly I had to sit close to the chalkboard so as to see what the lecturers write. At times I asked the lecturers to speak louder so that I can hear them though I felt embarrassed by making such requests. Previously I had to use a magnifier to read whenever I studied at the library or at the dormitory. I thank God that through the financial assistance the seminary raised for me from friends overseas, there has been a vast improvement in my disability. I have a hearing aid and eye glasses. Now I do not need to sit close to the chalkboard. I do not need a magnifier. I hear the voices of lecturers.

I am grateful to the East West Interknit for raising funds for me. I thank all those who donated money for me. I am also grateful to Dr. David and Florence Anderson who took special interest in my health during their sabbatical teaching at Good News Theological College and Seminary. After my education at the seminary I will minister the gospel to others. My special interest will be focused on needy children and adults.
